I was fortunate to have known Sue as both friend and biologist. Although we never lived in the same town, when our paths did cross, we always made time to catch up and share our prevailing highs or lows, reflect on current events and of course talk about our pets. She never missed an opportunity to ask how I was, and as others have noted, her sincerity was evident. We had a chance to work together in the field for a few weeks banding red-cockaded woodpecker nestlings in May 2001 - she came down to the NC Sandhills to help when I had a broken elbow. After 10 hour field days she would "retire" to where her horse was stabled for the duration of her stay and ride in the evenings. Her energy was astonishing! I've attached photos from her time on Fort Bragg. I was always amazed by her knowledge and accomplishments - she had made and was continually making an imprint on the scientific community. Her passion for life and compassion for all was inspiring - it is difficult to accept that she is gone. -- Kerry B.
